The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government has raised its MERS response level to "serious" and advised the public to avoid travelling to South Korea due to the climbing number of cases there. On average, about 5,000 people travel between Hong Kong and South Korea every day. The Department of Health also advises travellers in South Korea and the Middle East to avoid unnecessary visits to healthcare facilities.
