CCTV9英语新闻:中国反对台湾分裂活动(在线收听) |
The spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of China's State Council says the country is opposed to anyone conducting 'secessionists activities'.
The statement came after the chairperson of Taiwan's opposition Democratic Progressive Party, Tsai Ing-wen, sidestepped questions about the One-China policy, during her visit in the United States.
"The leader of Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party has talked about cross-Strait relations in the United States through various forms. Yet, she didn't elaborate clearly about the core issues. Opposing secessionist activities and adhering to the 1992 Consensus form the common political foundation for the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations. The core lies in recognizing that both the mainland and Taiwan belong to China. Their relationship is not that of two countries. The Democratic Progressive Party needs to answer for this," said Ma Xiaoguang, Spokesperson of Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council.
Tsai Ing-wen has come under fire for deliberately avoiding mentioning the 1992 Consensus, which was reached after rounds of talks between the Chinese mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait, and Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation. The Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson emphasized that the consensus should not be narrowly understood as an agreement only between the Communist Party of China and the Kuomintang. The Consensus represents a basic attitude towards the One China policy shared on both sides of the Strait.
"If this foundation were shaken, there could not be any peaceful development of cross-Strait relations. Therefore, people need the Democratic Progressive Party to clearly answer these questions: What is the relationship between the sides? What is the basis for the development of cross-Strait relations? And how can we safeguard this development?" Ma said.
Tsai has been meeting with several high-ranking US officials during her visit in Washington. Ma called on the US not to send the wrong signals to Taiwan.
"We believe the United States' actions this time go against the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations. The US side should earnestly abide by the One-China policy, and the principles in the three China-US Joint Communiques. It should stand firmly opposed to the independence of Taiwan, and not send wrong messages to the Taiwan secessionists. They should instead do more things in favor of the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations," Ma said. |
