January 7th, 1789The United States holds its first the first presidential election more than a decade after the declaration of independence. Americans both for elect tours who a month later choose George Washington to be the nation’s first President. 1999In Washington, an impeached American president goes on trial before the U.S. Senate for only the second time in history. Bill Clinton faced charges of perjury and obstruction of justice over the Monica Lewinski scandal. He is acquitted the following month. 1979Vietnamese forces captured the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh, overthrowing the Khmer Rouge regime of Paul Pot. As many as 2 million Cambodians died under that regime which had turn the country into a vast slave labor camp.
