 Jan.5th 2000, the US government decides six-year-old Elian Gonzalez should be returned to his father in Cuba. That move touches all of angry protestors by Cuban Americans in Miami, home of Elian’s US relatives. After a legal battle, the government seizes Elian from those relatives month later and the boy returns to Cuba.

1925, Nellie T. Ross succeeds her late husband as governor of Wyoming, becoming the first female governor in American history.
1998, Sonny Bono, pop star-turned-politician, is killed after striking the tree while skiing in South Lake Tahoe, California; he was 62.
2004, after 14 years of denials, Pete Rose publicly admits he bet on  baseball while he was manager of Cincinnati Reds.
1973, make way for the boss, Bruce Springsteen releases his debut album Greetings from Asbury park, N.J.
