July 5th, 1954. A chapter during the dawn of “Rock and Roll” takes place at Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee. That’s where Elvis Presley records the song “That’s all right, mamma.” during his first commercial recording session. 1946, the bikini bathing suit makes its debut during an outdoor fashion show at the Molitor Pool in Paris.
2006, Kenneth Lay, founder of the energy giant Enron, dies in Aspen, Colorado at age 64. At the time Lay was facing decades in prison for one of the biggest corporate scandals in US history.
1975, Tennis great Arthur Ashe becomes the first black man to win a singles title at Wimbledon, defeating Jimmy Connors.
1947, Larry Doby becomes the first black player in baseball’s American League. He debuts with the Cleveland Indians just months after Jacky Robinson breaks baseball’s racial barrier.
And 2002, “Baseball’s a hard game and cause hitting a ball is just the fun of it.” Baseball Hall of Famer Ted Williams of Boston Red Sox dies in Citrus County Florida. He was 83.
