 December 14th 1799, George Washington, the Revolutionary War general who became America’s first president dies at his Mount Vernon estate in Virginia at age 67.

1911, Norwegian explorer, Roald Amundsen and his group become the first men to reach the South Pole. They beat out rival expedition led by Robert F. Scott by more than a month.
1995, in Paris, leaders of Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia sign an internationally-brokered peace treaty. That move formally ends more than three and a half years’ bloodshed in the Balkans.
And 1985, baseball’s Roger Maris, whose single season home run record , lasted more than thirty-five years, dies in Houston at age 51.
