Top 5 Songs for Week Ending Sept. 5

With the Top Five Countdown, we’re counting down the five most popular songs in the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Singles chart, for the week ending September 5, 2015.

We'd like to say things change on the hit list, but…they don’t. Not one little bit.

Let’s open in fifth place, where The Weeknd holds with “The Hills.” His new album is off to a good start. Abel Tesfaye, also known as The Weeknd, released his Beauty Behind The Madness album on August 28 and currently leads the iTunes Album Sales Chart. It’s also expected to dominate the Billboard Top 200 albums list.

Major Lazer, DJ Snake, and MO hold in fourth place for a second week with “Lean On.” This is one of our favorite pop songs of this North American summer.  And, it turns out to be a "hand-me-down."  Major Lazer leader Diplo tells Time Magazine that both Nicki Minaj and Rihanna were offered the song, and both turned it down. He says it was a blessing in disguise, because MO does such a great job.

Staying put in third place is Silento, with “Watch Me.” This song’s dance moves continue to make news. Two weeks ago, the U.S. ABC network released a promo video for the new season of the television show Dancing With The Stars in which their dance pros did the “Whip” and “Nae Nae” popularized in the song.

The Weeknd’s latest hit, ”Can’t Feel My Face,” holds in second place. He fanned the flames at the MTV Awards when he performed this song. As in the video, pyrotechnics stole the show. Both Taylor Swift and her nemesis-turned-friend Kanye West were spotted dancing in the audience.

OMI has something to dance about this week: not only is “Cheerleader” still number one, he has an album on the way.  On August 30, the Jamaican singer turned up at the MTV Awards to announce that his album Me 4 U will hit the market on October 16. That’s the same day Demi Lovato drops her next album Confident. We could have a fight on our hands!

But, we'll wait and see with an all-new Top Five lineup next week.
