 April 3rd, 1968 - In Memphis, Tennessee, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. gives this speech on the night before his assassination: “We've got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn't matter with me now. Because I have been to the mountaintop.”

1936 - Bruno Richard Hauptmann is electrocuted in Trenton, New Jersey, for the kidnap and murder of aviator Charles Lindbergh’s infant son.
1948 - President Harry Truman signs the Marshall Plan. The eight-package helps Europe allies rebuild after World War II and resist Communism.
1882 - Jesse James, the notorious Wild West outlaw is shot to death in St. Joseph, Missouri. Robert Ford, a member of the James gang pulls the trigger. James’s brother Frank surrenders a month later.
1860 - Another iconic chapter from America’s Wild West years. The legendary Pony Express begins service between St. Joseph, Missouri and Sacramento, California.
And 1924 - Actor Marlon Brando was born in Omaha, Nebraska. Among his movie credits: “A Streetcar Named Desire,” "On the Waterfront" and "The Godfather". Today In History, April 3rd, Sandy Kozel, the Associated Press.
