Police say a college instructor suspected in the fatal shooting of a professor at a university in Mississippi died Monday night. Authorities say he was trying to flee police when he pulled over and fatally shot himself.

Massive wildfires in California have forced thousands of people to evacuate and has destroyed hundreds of homes. A 72-year-old woman died in her home over the weekend. Firefighters say flames had engulfed the area by the time they got there and were unable to save her.

People trying to cross the Hungarian border Tuesday morning pleaded with police to let them through. New rules introduced at midnight stopped port patrol officials from letting most of the migrants into the country. The new laws, meant to deal with the influx of refugees and migrants, made it a criminal offence to damage Hungary's newly-erected border defenses.
