A staff member of the Kenting National Park Administration Office reminded parents that August at Kenting National Park in the southernmost county of Pingtung is a good time to see barn swallows and land crabs.

The sight of hundreds of swallows perching on telephone cables and crabs crossing the road to spawn on the seashore provides children with a great opportunity to learn about the natural environment, said Tsai Yi-jung.
Hengchun is one of the two main places barn swallows use as a resting place during their migration in and out of Taiwan, Tsai said, adding that they are among the most common birds seen on the peninsula, along with brown shrikes, herons, birds of prey and waterfowl.
On the other hand, land crabs making their way down to the sea in huge numbers to lay their eggs is another spectacular scene in Kenting during the month of August, Tsai went on.
As there is a road separating the crabs' normal habitat and their spawning grounds, the animals are often crushed beneath the wheels of passing cars, a sorry sight. This has prompted the enacting of traffic restrictions at peak times to protect the creatures.
Banana Bay and Port Village are the two main crab-spawning areas, according to Tsai.
Going to visit Kenting is definitely a no-brainer!
