Top NewsAPEC Leaders Summit OpensThis year's APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting is underway in Manila, capital of the Phillipines.
Economic integration, small and medium enterprises, and sustainable growth are high on the agenda of the two-day session.
During the summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping is to brief other leaders about the implementation of the consensus reached at last year's APEC meeting in Beijing and also the progress in the implementation of the China-proposed Silk Road initiative.
For more on the meeting, CRI's Tu Yun and Brian Kopczynski earlier spoke to Dr. Liang Wei, Professor of International Policy Studies at the Monterey Institute of International Studies in the US.

China plays pivotal role in economic development of Asia-Pacific areas.

With the leaders from 21 countries around the world in Manila for the 23rd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, more attention has once again been placed on China's role in boosting and leading regional economic development.
CRI's Li Jianhua has more.
Reporter:
The theme of this year's summit is "Building Inclusive Economies, Building a Better World," with four key priorities.
They include enhancing the regional economic integration agenda, fostering small- and medium-sized enterprises' participation in regional and global markets, investing in human capital development, and building sustainable and resilient communities.
Harold Eddington, President of JPMorgan Chase in Australia and New Zealand, expresses the view that regional economic integration under the idea of building inclusive economies will be conducive to the long-term prosperity of countries within the Asia-Pacific areas.
"We've seen substantial economic integration in the Asia-Pacific areas and the APEC region. And that's going to continue. Initially that integration was around manufactured goods. Increasingly it's also about services. Tourism is a good example of that. And I think great economic cooperation and integration can be positive for everybody, for the more developing economies in Asia and for the major economies as well."Currently, economic development in the Asia-Pacific region has been slowing down, with an expected growth rate of 3.2%. This is the lowest since the economic crisis in 2008.
Therefore, China's economic transition has attracted most attention among enterprises in the Asia-Pacific areas. They hope China will continue leading the regional economic development.
"We know it's going through some important changes at the moment. The focus is moving from exports to domestic consumption. Those changes will take time. And we also know the economy in China is now 50 % services. And those changes also will take some time. But China has delivered remarkable growth in many ways over the last 30 years. And I have no doubt that it would continue to grow and prosper and be an ever more important part of the APEC area."Director of AERO Montreal, Susanne Nuba, believes that China's development will provide the Asia-Pacific areas with more commercial opportunities. And she is also expecting more cooperation between Canadian and Chinese enterprises.
"And because it's the market of today but more the market of tomorrow, you know it's growing so fast. You know it's so important China for the world, you know because you are the second economy of the world. And trade with your country is crucial, for Canada."The Asia-Pacific region, which is vital to global peace and development, accounts for 40 percent of the world population, 48 percent of world trade, and 57 percent of global output.

Addressing this year's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation CEO summit in the Filipino capital Manila, Chinese President Xi Jinping gave his strong support to regional economic integration and China's ongoing economic transition.

Reporter:
In his keynote speech, President Xi Jinping first reviewed the world economy, saying that it may take a long time for the global economy to regain complete health.
As such, Xi Jinping called for the Asia-Pacific area to initiate reform and innovation.
"We must push ahead with reform and renovation. Addressing underlying problems in the world economy, carrying out the monetary stimulus policies alone is not enough. We must make greater efforts in promoting the economic structural reform and make the supply system better adapted to the changing demand structure. The Asia-Pacific region should go ahead in the world, in that aspect."The latest statistics suggest growth among the 21 APEC economies has softened to 3.1 percent in the second quarter of this year, down 0.3 percent from a year ago.
That is one of the reasons why the APEC leaders have gathered in Manila on Thursday to address their common challenges under the theme of "Building Inclusive Economies, Building a Better World."Meanwhile, President Xi Jinping reassured global business leaders that China's economy is proving resilient despite strong downward pressure.
"Overall, the enduring, positive trend of China's economic development has not changed. The characteristics of the economy being resident, full of potential, with ample room for maneuvering have not changed. The fundamentals and conditions supporting the continuing growth of the Chinese economy have not changed."His words come as the world's second largest economy has reported a 6.9 percent GDP growth in the third quarter of this year. This is the lowest since the 2nd quarter of 2009.
As China undergoes economic transition, President Xi says Beijing is planning to ease restrictions for foreign investors as one of the key financial reform measures.
"We will step up reforms of the foreign investors management system, substantially cut restrictions on market access for foreign investment, improve intellectual property rights protection, and foster an open, transparent, fair and highly efficient market environment."At the same time, President Xi Jinping has urged APEC members to push forward the process of setting up an Asia-Pacific Free Trade Area, or known as FTAAP.
Last November, APEC members reached consensus on a roadmap to launch the study into the FTAAP during the 2014 APEC Leaders' Summit in Beijing.
This was seen as a historic step for APEC members to boost the openness of the Asia-Pacific economy and safeguard multilateral trade systems.
The Chinese President says nothing should be allowed to disrupt the development of the Asia-Pacific region and each member needs to resolve their differences through dialogue and consultation.

Obama appeals investors to tackle climate changeU.S. President Barack Obama has issued a new call at the APEC CEO summit, appealing to world leaders and private investors to address climate change.
Obama is calling on companies to become more involved in the climate change discussions.
"My message to you today is that your businesses can do right by your bottom lines and by our planet and future generation. The old rules that said you couldn't grow our economies and protect our environment at the same time - those are out dated."Obama has also led a panel discussion on sustainability innovation with a group of global entrepreneurs attending the APEC CEO's meeting.
Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping hammered out their carbon emission plans in Beijing during the last APEC meeting.
It in, the Chinese side is promising to have emissions in the country peak by 2030, as well as increase the share of non-fossil fuels in energy consumption to 20 percent.
The U.S. side has committed to reduce its emissions by 26-28 percent by 2025.
Jack Ma pushes for WTO 2.0 to help small business in APEC CEO summitAlibaba founder Jack Ma has issued a call for a new global body to be established to support small businesses.
Jack Ma has made the call while addressing this year's APEC CEO's summit in Manila.
He's suggesting a global body similar to the World Trade Organzation can be established to help small businesses grow.
"Developing countries and small guys have not benefited enough from globalization. So what we should do? We should help more people, help more developing countries, help more small guys, young people, because if we don't do so, we'll get more and more disasters coming."Jack Ma says e-commerce companies like his can help support the development of small businesses.
"What I'm interested in is how we can use this technology to influence more people, to help more small businesses in the world. If China can do it, why the other countries cannot? We have helped 12 million businesses, small businesses in particular, use our platform to sell goods online, to communicate with customers online. So we believe this model can work in other countries as well as it does in China."Alibaba's Tmall generated some 14.5 billion U.S. dollars worth of sales from its client's stores during its annual Singles Day event this year.
Xi Jinping Meets Colombia, NZ LeadersChinese President Xi Jinping has held talks with leaders from Colombia and New Zealand as part of his time at the APEC Summit in Manila.
Meeting with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, Xi Jinping says the Chinese government has been opening the doors for Chinese companies hoping to invest in Colombia.
For his part, Santos says he hopes China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, will support the peace process to end the half-century-long insurgency in Colubmia.
Santos' government has been meeting with Columbia's FARC rebels the past 3-years to try to bring the over 50-year insurgency in Columbia to an end.

The two have also talked about how to increase trade and investment in one-another's economies.
Two Suspects Dead in Anti-terror Raid after Paris AttacksA large anti-terrorist operation in the north Paris suburbs is thought to be drawing to an end, with two suspects connected to last week's Paris attacks killed.
The police say the two killed, were a man and a woman. The woman reportedly blew herself up by setting off a suicide vest.
Five others have been arrested after heavily armed police raided an apartment building in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The operation is said to be targetting Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the Belgian jihadist believed to be the mastermind behind the terrorist attacks that killed about 130 people last Friday night.
Sporadic explosions and gunshots have been heard since 4:30 a.m. local time when the operation started.
Public transport has been suspended in the area.
Residents of the raided building were told to lie on the floor and not to approach their windows.
Another key suspect, Salah Abdeslam - thought to be one of the gunmen in the Paris attacks - is still at large.
Two Paris-bound flights grounded due to bomb threatsA pair of flights out of the United States headed for Paris have been forced to make precautionary landings following bomb threats.
One of the flights out of Los Angeles with 473 people on-board had to land in Salt Lake City, Utah after a threat was phoned in.
The other, which was leaving Washington, DC for Paris, was forced to land in the city of Halifax on Canada's east coast.
That flight had 234 people onboard.
Both flights have since been allowed to continue after a security sweep of both planes.
Authorities have not said who they believe may be responsible for the threats.
France Invokes Mutual Defense ClauseFrance has become the first nation to invoke the European Union's mutual defense clause in the wake of the deadly terror attacks in Paris.
French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian elaborated on the ways EU countries can assist.
"It may be by co-operating with French interventions in Syria, in Iraq, it may be in support of France in other operations. What I impressed upon my colleagues is that France can no longer do everything."All 28 EU member states have accepted this call from France.
Established in 2009, the mutual defense clause states that "if a member state is the victim of armed aggression on its territory, the other member states shall have, toward it, an obligation of aid and assistance by all the means in their power."For more on this, CRI's Liu Kun earlier spoke to Shen Dingli, Associate Dean of Institute of International studies, Fudan University.

Britain to develop offensive cyber capabilityThe British government has announced that it is stepping up efforts to tackle the ISIL threat from the Internet.
In a speech at the GCHQ intelligence communications facility in Cheltenham, the Chancellor George Osborne said more money would be spent on developing greater cyber capability as a preemptive move to fend off online attacks.
George Osborne said Islamic State fighters were trying to develop the ability to hack into Britain's infrastructure such as hospitals and air traffic control systems.
"They have not so far been able to use it to kill people by attacking our infrastructure through cyber attack. They do not yet have that capability, but we know they want it and we know they're doing their best to build it. So when we talk about tackling ISIL, that means tackling their cyber threat as well as the threat of their guns and their bombs and their knives."Osborne said public spending on cyber security would be almost doubled to a total of 1.9 billion pounds over the coming five years, despite planned spending cuts aimed at returning Britain to a budget surplus by the end of the decade.
In an effort to deal with the ISIS threat, British Prime Minister David Cameron has said that the size of the country's intelligence agency staff would be increased by 15 percent.
U.S. lawmakers request investigation into arrests of Chinese-American scientistsFour U.S. lawmakers have urged the country's Department of Justice to investigate whether race or national origin played any part in the cases of several Chinese-American scientists who were wrongfully suspected of economic espionage.
American Congresswoman Judy Chu questioned the Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, over the cases of National Weather Service hydrologist Sherry Chen, Temple University professor Xiaoxing Xi, and other similar cases.
Lynch rejected the suggestion and refused to give any further comment on the two specific cases raised.
"I can state to you unequivocally that the Department of Justice does not focus in investigations on any individual on the basis of their race and their national origin. I would respect the specific cases that you mentioned and am unable to comment on the specifics at this time."Chen and Xi had been suspected of economic espionage, only to have those charges dropped at a later date.
In the past year alone, charges have been dropped against five Chinese-born scientists who were accused of crimes related to the theft of trade secrets or economic spying.
Tibetan Plateau Becomes WarmerA new report is suggesting the Tibetan Plateau has been getting both warmer and moister over the past 50 years.
The Chinese Academy of Sciences has issued the report, which has looked at climate data from the Tibetan region from 1960 to 2012.
Researcher Xu Baiqing with the Academy says they've looked a number of different areas when making their assessment.
"The factors we looked at include the climate, which means temperature and rainfall changes. Water, which refers to changes in glaciers, rivers and lakes. Ecological system, which mainly refers to changes in forest and wetland ecosystems. We also factored-in the influence humans have had on the ecology and the effects environmental protection has had."The report suggests the annual temperature on the Tibetan Plateau has increased by as much as 0.4 degrees every 10-years over the past 5-years, which is double the average for the rest of the world.
The analysis suggests temperatures on the Tibetan Plateau are going to increase by an average of 4-degrees over the next 100 years.
Researcher Xu Baiqing says warmer temperatures on the Tibetan Plateau may create problems outside the plateau.
"Generally speaking, a warmer and moister environment is good for the Tibetean plateau itself, especially for its ecological systems. But on the other hand, it will also create problems, including the acceleration of the melting of glaciers. This will will increase river flow rates and raise the water level of lakes over the a short term. But over the long term, if the glaciers melt too quickly, it could lead to the exhaustion of the upstream water resources. Increased rainfall might also lead to more disasters such as mudslides and landslides."The Tibetan Plateau's glaciers contribute water to a number of rivers in China and other parts of Asia, including the Yangtze and Mekong Rivers.
US Tiny Homes Movement in the U.S. Grow SlowlyAnchor:
There is growing enthusiasm in the US for downsizing homes and making life simpler in the process.
As CRI's Xie Cheng reports, people have been inspired by the so-called 'tiny house movement.'
Reporter:
Hilary and Shane Lentz, a couple from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, had been considering a major downsize for years.
"The thing that I wanted to see for myself was, does it feel really tiny, like do you feel claustrophobic when you're in here? And I was pretty surprised, I did not feel all that closed in feeling, like even up in the loft, which is kind of you know a smaller space up there, it was very comfortable."Now a Harvard University project has given them a taste of what it would be like, and this is the idea of Harvard's graduate students who've created a startup called "Getaway", which makes tiny cabins available for vacation rentals.
Jon Staff is the CEO of the "Getaway".
"There are a lot of people who book our getaway Tiny Houses, they're doing so because they're really excited about building their own tiny house and they want to test drive tiny house living."Harvard University rents out tiny houses for 99 US dollars a night.
People considering joining the tiny house movement can give it a try in a 160 square foot space for a night or two.
Jay Austin built his 145 square foot home in an urban farm in the middle of Washington DC three years ago and doesn't regret the move.
But he says others who are looking for a location need to be persistent.
"I would say just go for it. I would find land, find you know kind of the will to build, or to buy and if a city official, a zoning official, or a town official tells you that a tiny house is not illegal ask for that citation."Industry experts say it is hard to pinpoint actual numbers behind the trend.
According to The National Association of Realtors, the number of buyers purchasing small homes, which are properties of less than a thousand square feet has remained around one percent for the past five years.
For CRI, I'm Xie Cheng.

----------------In action last night from the Asian qualifiers,The boys from the mainland still have an outside shot of making it into the next round, though their chances have been dealt a significant setback.
The Dragons held Hong Kong to a nil-nil draw last night.
Captian Zheng Zhi says the draw is disappointing.
"We had a lot of chances in the match, but we just weren't lucky. We hit the crossbar and the posts on a number of opportunities. Its a shame we couldn't walk away with a victory."With the draw, the mainland squad still keeps pace with 2nd place Hong Kong in Group C.
Hong Kong has 14-points, while the mainland squad has 11.
However, but while the mainland side does have a shot at surpassing Hong Kong into 2nd in Group C, as Hong Kong has only one match left and the Dragons have two, the prospect of the mainland squad moving forward has been dimmed somewhat.
The Dragons need to win their last 2 matches against the Maldives and Qatar, the top team in their group, and get some help from outside the group, as only the 4 top 2nd-place teams from the 8 groups will move on to the next round of World Cup Qualifying.
