Top News59 missing as landslide hits south ChinaFifty-nine people remain missing following a landslide in Shenzhen.

Rescuers in the southern Chinese city say they have detected signs of life at several locations at the slide site and rescue work is ongoing.

Yang Feng, director of Shenzhen's Emergency Management Office, says the missing people include 36 males and 23 females.

"More than 900 residents having been evacuated. The seven people rescued from the landslide have been sent to hospitals; they do not have life-threatening injuries."The landslide struck an industrial park on Sunday, burying 33 buildings and leaving more than 100,000 square meters of debris at the site.

People working in the industrial park also reported seeing an explosion.

"The moment we got out of the workshop, the building collapsed. When we got out, we saw an explosion from a nearby gas station."More than 1,500 people, including firemen, policemen, and medical staff, are involved in the rescue operation.

Rescue efforts have been hampered by rain, low nighttime visibility, and the large amount of mud.

Zhang Xiaowei is the deputy chief of the Guangdong Fire Station.

"It is raining now, sometimes the rain is heavy, which makes the scene wet and muddy. Therefore, it increases the difficulty of the rescue work. We are now searching for survivors. About 60,000 square meters of ground are buried in mud, involving 500,000 cubic meters of rock and soil."Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang have urged immediate effort to minimize casualties.

The cause of the landslide is still being investigated.

However initial media reports suggest that the loosened soil was from construction works and had been piled nearby for years.

Heavy smog shrouds over 30 N China citiesChina's environmental authority has revealed that Beijing and over 30 cities in the north of the country are currently shrouded in heavy smog.

Beijing is in the third day of a red alert, the most serious level in the four-tier color-coded pollution warning system.

Local authorities have limited vehicles on roads and banned fireworks and outdoor barbecues.

The alert was issued on Friday, 24 hours before the severe air pollution hit the city.

Authorities say the move helps to reduce pollutants and gives the public an early warning to take counter-measures.

Zhu Lili, chief broadcaster with China National Environmental Monitoring Centre, explains how they developed their forecast before issuing the alert.

"Referring to the current list of sources of emissions and the real-time monitoring data collected from the internet, we simulate the future atmospheric conditions with high-performance computers and get the result for the future changes of pollutants density."It's the second time for the Beijing to issue a red alert this month.

Wang Bin is a senior official with the Beijing Environment Bureau.

"Issuing a red alert doesn't mean the air quality worse than what we've seen before. We have revised the alert plan for severe air pollution, which largely reduces the threshold for issuing a red alert. The threshold where we issue a red alert is actually where we issued orange alerts years before. "Tianjin and some other cities issued orange alerts.

Environmental Protection authorities say smog is likely to linger until Tuesday and is expected to ease from Wednesday as cold air move southwards.

Schools and Parents Urge Government to Issue Regulation on Classroom Air Purifier InstallingAnchorAs schools in Beijing and other parts of northeastern China suspend classes because of the red alert over air pollution, many parents are demanding that air purifiers should be installed for the students.

CRI's Niu Honglin has details.

ReporterWith major pollution days becoming more frequent, students are staying home, often without supervision. Their parents say it would be better if their children were in the classroom, and that's why schools need to install air purifiers.

"Our school bought air filters last year. We did a little fund raising, with each parent throwing in several hundred for that.""We've already bought two air cleaners for the class, both of which are installed."The suggestions come as some parents say they received short notice from their child's school during the first red alert for air pollution, issued earlier this month.

Many parents say they were caught by surprise, especially working couples, giving them little time to figure out how to take care of their children during the day.

Some parents have donated purifiers to their kid's classroom, while others fund raise together to make the purchase.

However, making such a donation to a school doesn't always happen smoothly, with some schools even returning the air purifiers to their well-intended donors.

Liu Liangcheng is the vice-principal of Beijing's Taipinglu primary school, where each classroom has been installed with two air filters.

Liu says installing air cleaners bought by parents can lead to problems.

"We have refused air purifiers bought by parents before, as there is a clear and strict rule for education fees. We can't just break the rule here. And fixed asset management is also a relevant issue. Also, if we accept one parent's donation, there might be pressure on others who don't have the ability to do so."He adds that without a standard guidance from local authorities, the brand-choice of the purifier, installation, and even the security of the device can each be an issue.

Also, experts say air purifiers can introduce other unhealthy factors.

Deng Gaofeng, head of the low-carbon-building study office with the China Academy of Building Research, says regular air filtering may cause CO2 concentration to rise.

"Take the classroom we tested for instance. If we keep windows and doors closed during classes, the concentrations of CO2 in the classroom will double from 1000 PPM to some 2000 PPM, while according to safety standards, the highest index should not be more than 1500."She adds that a more advanced and more expansive fresh air system is a heather solution.

Back in July, Beijing Municipal Government said it is discussing the possibility of a unified classroom air purifier installation plan, but no actual regulation has been published as of yet.

Top Legislature to Review Family-Planning PolicyThe top legislature here in China is set to approve a revision to end the country's decades-old one-child policy.

A meeting of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, starting today, will last for a week.

The meeting is expected to finalize a timetable for implementation of the amended policy nationwide.

Lawmakers are also to review the Counter-Terrorism Law and the country's first law concerning traditional Chinese medicine.

China's one-child generation reports for dutyAnchorBorn after the 1980s, when China started to implement its one-child policy, the so-called one-child generation has often been labelled as self-centered and irresponsible.

Now, with the easing of the policy, many have started to worry that having two children may be too big a burden for themOur reporter Yao Yongmei takes a closer look.

ReporterThirty-year-old Wang Dongyu is a full-time housewife with a 3-year-old son. Both she and her husband are the only child of their family.

"Only children indeed have a longer psychological weaning period. They are used to being taken care of so even when they are 24 or 25, they still feel like a child. It is actually not much different even after having their own children. It is customary that it is once again the duty of the grandparents to take care of the new borns."One may wonder whether it is possible for this generation to handle two children as the central government officially ended its one-child policy earlier this year.

Wang Dongyu quit her job when she was expecting her son. Now she says she wants another child but will not give up her career again.

"I will not consider quitting my job if another child is coming. I may have to ask my parents to help me."However, Wang's mother Chen Hairong is not this confident.

"I think it is too much for them to face social competitions, look after the elderly and the next generation at the same time. It is compounded if the elderly have health problems. So of course we will help them."Theoretically there will be a 4-2-2 structure for each typical one-child family - four grandparents, the couple and their two children.

Thirty-year-old Wang Dongyu says she is worried about what to do when their parents get old.

"One day they will get sick and need particular care and we have our job and two children. It makes me nervous even thinking about it. I do not know the best answer at least for now."While her father Wang Xudong says it is not an issue at all.

"It used to the duty of the children to take care of the elderly. Now they have four or even more elders to care of as well as their own job. I believe there will not a problem, because a maturing social security system will take care of us. We have steady income so we will not put more burdens on them. And I feel completely OK to be sent to a nursing home if one day I need constant care. What they need to do is just some occasional visits. I think I will be content."It used to be a serious worry for some people that a slew of social problems will come out at this point. While, at least for now it seems to be unfounded - more and more one-child grown-ups are reporting for duty.

China-South Korea FTA comes into forceThe new free trade agreement between China and South Korea has officially come into effect.

As part of the agreement, tariffs on more than 90 percent of goods traded between the two will be eliminated over the next 20-years.

Zhang Shaogang from the Ministry of Commerce says the FTA will definitely benefit Chinese consumers.

"Female consumers are given access to South Korean cosmetics with lower prices and better services. In terms of medical cooperation, more South Korean hospitals, especially plastic surgery hospitals, may open branches in China."South Korean analysis suggests the country's manufacturers are going to see their overall export growth increase by 1.35-billion U.S. dollars over the next 12-months.

"Despite its impressive achievements, the South Korean economy only accounts for 1.8 percent of the global total. South Korea won't be able to lift its per capita income to 30,000 US dollars by relying on domestic market only. It should go global and exploit broader export markets. So it's a necessary choice for us to establish FTA."China is South Korea's largest trading partner, with South Korea importing around one-quarter of all of its products from China.

FTA to Boost Financial Exchanges Between China and AustraliaThe newly enacted China-Australia Free Trade Agreement is expected to boost bilateral financial exchanges and cooperation.

With the financial sector a major focus of the agreement, the two sides will further joint efforts in banking and securities, and against money laundering.

Australia also plans to reduce the operating costs for Chinese banks to open branches there.

President of Bank of China in Sydney Hu Shanjun says it will be much easier for Chinese banks to establish their presence in Australia.

"In that past, it was difficult for foreign financial institutions to launch businesses here. They need to first launch representative offices, and then upgrade them into branches. Now Australia says it welcomes foreign banks, and the process will likely be shortened. Well-known Chinese banks looking to open branches in Australia can now do so directly. "The two sides have also agreed to loosen the formalities for approving investments, benefiting Chinese private enterprises looking to invest in Australia.

Chinese investment in Australia stood at around 75 billion U.S. dollars as of the end of 2014.

Chinese drone maker SZ DJI opens first retail storeAnchorThe world's largest consumer drone maker - DJI - has opened its first flagship retail store in Shenzhen, southern China.

With the move, the company looks to further extend its hold on the global drone market.

ReporterAs the market for commercial drones goes more mainstream, the industry's major players are trying to attract a wider range of consumers.

Michael Perry, Director of Strategic Partnerships with DJI, says the 800-square-metre shop aims to help the Chinese firm expand its customer base.

"We've now reached a size where we think we can reach a broader set of consumers, beyond the early adopters, beyond the tech guys who are just adopting new technology, but to a broader consumer market, who are really excited about the technology but they want to understand it before they use it."On Sunday, people surrounded a flight cage inside the store and watched as staff flew drones during demonstration sessions.

One spectator, 36-year-old airline crew member Liu Shaoge, brought his seven-month-old son along.

He says drones are good toys for children.

"I think this is quite good. When my child is older, I'll buy one for him so he can play with it. This is good. We didn't have things like these when we were children. It will be good for children to play with them."Others queued to buy a drone on the shop's opening day as the first 300 customers could get discounts up to 30 percent off.

30-year-old IT consultant Jack Wan, who was in line for about two hours before he bought a Phantom 3 drone, says the drone is complimentary to his hobby - photography.

"DJI gives common people a chance to play with drones. In the past, using a drone was something exclusive, the idea seemed very far away from us. But now it's very close. And normal people can afford to buy one too."DJI has claimed 70 percent of the commercial drone market worldwide and a larger portion of the consumer market.

Research firm Taibo Intelligence forecasts that revenue of the Chinese drone industry will more than double to 2.5 billion yuan, or 388 million USD, this year and grow by as much as eight fold to 20 billion yuan by 2020.

Chinese Emperors' Residence in Beijing to be RestoredA major building at Beijing's Palace Museum, or Forbidden City, is going to be renovated based on traditional construction techniques.

The Hall of Mental Cultivation, or Yangxindian, built in 1537, was the residence of the last eight Qing Dynasty emperors.

The hall has not been restored since the early 1980s,Fang Qiu is the director of the Ancient Architecture Department of the Palace Museum"We need to do a number of studies and research in the early stage of the renovation. The first part is to map and position the existing cultural relics to provide the best proofs for the recovery of the original appearance. That is one of the major differences from other restoration projects of ancient buildings,"The restoration is expected to be completed by 2020 to mark the 600th anniversary of the Forbidden City.

UN-backed cease-fire to be extended in Yemen: ministerYemen's Saudi-backed government has announced that the country's shaky seven-day ceasefire will be extended for another week, on the condition that the Shiite Houthi group and its allies commit to the truce.

The country's newly-appointed foreign minister, Abul-Malik Almekhafi, made the announcement in Switzerland on Sunday.

He's in Europe as head of the government delegation for peace talks to end the conflict in Yemen.

Both sides had promised to respect a UN-backed ceasefire that coincided with the current round of bargaining, which began on December 15th. Several violations of the truce have been reported.

Meanwhile, a new round of peace talks between the country's warring factions has been scheduled for 14 January.

The United Nations' special envoy for Yemen confirmed the news.

Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed also said talks between pro-government fighters and Shiite rebels had resulted in a host of measures.

"In particular during the talks, the parties agreed to first develop a package of confidence-building measures including a plan for the release of prisoners, which will include the release of all detainees and prisoners once a permanent ceasefire is in place. "UN-brokered consultations started last Tuesday in Switzerland.

The consultations involve 24 Yemeni representatives and advisers.

The violence in Yemen began in September of last year after Houthi rebels overran the capital and the government fled.

WTO Nairobi meeting ends with major breakthrough on global tradeAnchorThe 10th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization has concluded in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi.

Member countries agreed to abolish agricultural export subsidies and also approved the accession of Liberia and Afghanistan into the WTO.

AnchorAfter five days of intense discussions, the 162 WTO member countries reached a breakthrough agreement for the world trade system.

The new Nairobi Declaration includes the elimination of agricultural export subsidies and further tariff reduction for information and technology products.

WTO Director-General Roberto Azevedo hails the historic result of the conference.

"The decision you have taken today on export competition is truly historic. It is WTO's most significant outcome in agriculture. The elimination of agriculture subsidies, export subsidies are spectacularly significant."According to the declaration, developed nations will eliminate their scheduled farm export subsidies immediately, while developing countries will get rid of theirs from 2018.

Wang Shouwen, a deputy minister from China's Ministry of Commerce, says farm export subsidies have been a prime focus for developing countries.

"It is unfair because developed countries are financially capable of providing subsidies for farm products. But, as for developing countries, they can't get subsidies as their agriculture sectors are relatively small. So this deal has significant meanings for free agriculture trade, and, particularly, for farmers' income and the growth of agriculture in developing countries."US trade representative Michael Froman also said the deal would "put an end to some of the most trade distorting subsidies" and "help level the playing field for American farmers and ranchers".

The ministers also endorsed the Information Technology Agreement, which expands the range of information technology products for tariff cuts.

The import duties on some 200 high-tech products will be cut over the next 7 years,Their annual trade is estimated at 1.3 billion U.S. dollars, taking 8 percent of the total world trade volume.

Wang Shouwen says the expansion is a great means to buoy slowing international trade.

"They include medical and IT products that are quite high-tech. Once their tariffs are cut, consumers can enjoy lower prices and investors would be more willing to put in their money in these products."During the conference that kicked off Tuesday, Afghanistan and Liberia were also approved to join the WTO.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of WTO, and also the first ministerial meeting held on the African continent.

Spanish Election Polls CloseIn Spain, the Popular Party says it has received "strong support" from voters, but exit polls indicate the governing conservatives will fall short of an absolute majority in parliament.

Hundreds in India Protest Release of Gang Rape ConvictHundreds of protesters have taken to the streets of New Delhi, India's capital, to protest the release of a juvenile convicted in the fatal gang rape of a young woman in 2012.

The freed man, who was 17 at the time of the crime, finished his three-year term in a reform home on Sunday.

Protesters demanded the man remain in prison longer. But under Indian law, regardless of the crime, convicts under the age of 18 can be imprisoned for a maximum of three years.

Badri Singh, father of the rape victim, is among the protesters:

"Today, that juvenile has been released and now, whatever you do, he cannot be imprisoned again and I still demand he should not be released and if he has been already released he should be arrested again and the law (law relating to the age of juvenile suspects and convicts) should be changed as soon as possible."The rape and murder of 23-year-old student Jyoti Singh on a bus in 2012 shocked the country and triggered global outrage.

In response, India's government rushed through legislation doubling prison terms for rapists to 20 years and criminalizing related crimes.

China Releases New Map Of Macao SARA new map demarcating the maritime and land zones of the Macao Special Administrative Region is now on effect.

Premier Li Keqiang signed a decree to release the map on Sunday.

An 85-square-kilometer sea area to the east and south of Macao is to be administered by the Macao SAR.

A stretch of land for a border inspection building between Macao and Zhuhai City in Guangdong Province has also been set aside.

Lock-Up Shares Worth 31.3 Bln Yuan to Become TradableLock-up shares worth 31 billion yuan, or nearly 5 billion U.S. dollars, are set to become eligible for trade on China's stock market this week.

Data shows more than 4 billion shares from 22 companies will become tradable on the Shanghai and Shenzhen bourses.

Shanghai-listed Beijing Jingneng Power Company will see shares worth 14 billion yuan unlocked, the largest amount to hit the market.

Vanke and Baoneng spat heats upAnchorThe spat between China's largest property developer Vanke and its current biggest shareholder Baoneng Group has continued to heat up.

Vanke's President Yu Liang says the company is facing a "hostile takeover".

Last week, Chairman Wang Shi said Baoneng lacks sufficient credibility and may have a negative impact on Vanke's credit rating and reputation.

In response, Baoneng released a statement, saying it has a good reputation and abides by the laws.

Nepal approves 140 mln USD investments from Chinese firmThe government of Nepal has endorsed a Foreign Direct Investment proposal worth 140 million U.S. dollars made by China's Huaxin Cement Company.

Huaxin Cement is set to establish a cement plant in Nepal in partnership with Narayani Cement Company.

This is the country's second FDI proposal from China this year.

In July, Nepal endorsed an FDI proposal worth 360 million dollars made by China's Hongshi Holdings to set up a cement plant in Nepal with Shivam Cement.

Smartphone Sales of Huawei In Europe Grow 125%Sales of Huawei smartphones have grown 125 percent year-on-year in Central, Eastern, and Northern European regions.

3.5 million units have been delivered, an increase of over 110 percent compared with a year ago.

Meantime, sales revenue has grown by at least 60 percent.

According to the market research company GFK, Huawei's smartphone market share in Poland exceeded 20 percent, while in Finland it reached 13 percent.

Huawei has been cultivating the overseas handset market for years.

Currently, its mobile devices are sold in 170 countries and regions.

China's Electronics, IT Manufacturing Industry Grows FastOfficial data shows that the added value of China's electronics and IT manufacturing industry rose by 10.8 percent year on year from January to November in 2015.

The game winning points came from Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

Messi opened the scoring in the 34th minute with an assist from Neymar while shooting from the center box.

Suarez netted a one-on-one in the 49th minute with help from Sergio Busquets.

After that, he would score his second goal with a pass from Neymar in the 68th minute.

This is the club's 5th trophy in 2015.

Sanfrecce Hiroshima has beat Guangzhou Evergrande 2-1 to finish third in the Club World Cup.

It would be two second half goals from Hiroshima that would seal defeat for the Asian Club Champion.

Originally Sanfrecce was down 1-0, but after the second half, Guangzhou lost their lead and couldn't keep up.

After the game Guangzhou Evergrande's head coach Luiz Scolari spoke about the game.

"Sanfrecce Hiroshima played very well today and comparing to our previous encounters with Japanese clubs like Gamba Osaka and Kashiwa Reysol, they are very good sides and Japanese football in general has made great progress."This win marks the third time a Japanese teams has made third in the Club World Cup.

It has been confirmed that Pep Guardiola will leave Bayern Munich as coach at the end of the 2015-16 season and will be replaced by Carlo Ancelotti.

Despite the club's willingness to keep him on, Guardiola decided to leave after three seasons in charge.

He will be replaced by Ancelotti, who is a former Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Milan coach.

Ancelotti also helped Real Madrid earn its 10th Champions league title, beating Bayern in the processGuardiola has consistently batted away questions over his future.

CBA leaders Guangsha stayed on top for their 13th straight victory after a nerve racking win of 116-to-113 over Zhejiang on Sunday.

Jeremy Pargo was instrumental to Guangsha's win as he scored the match high of 33 points.

The two teams were tied at 59 before heading into the third quarter where a strong performance from Guangsha put the team in the lead.

The league leaders would stay on top for the rest of the game, but Zhejiang would always be close behind.

Behind Guangsha bringing up second in the league is Xinjiang who recently crushed Jilin, 122-96.

A teenage boy was apprehended by police on Sunday for throwing a water bottle at one of the players on Liaoning.

CBA player Guo Ailun suffered a severe cut from under his left eye as the water bottle connected with his head.

Guo is set to take 7 to 10 days to recover from the injury.

In recent years, CBA has seen several episodes of fan riots and violence from those attending the games.

Japan Beats China in Olympic Water Polo QualifiersIn some quick Water Polo news:

The Japanese men's water polo team made it to the Rio Olympics after beating China 16-10 in the Asian qualifying tournament on Sunday.

This is the third consecutive win for the Japanese team.

Stan Wawrinka helped his team, the Singapore Slammers, defend their International Premier Tennis League title after a 26-21 win over the Indian Aces in front of a delighted home crowd on Sunday.

Matches in the mixed team tennis league are decided by games won in five, one-set, shootouts over various formats.

Wawrinka excelled in his games and ensured the Slammers would claim victory over the Aces.

After their win, the Swiss champ spoke to the press about how he was feeling.

EntertainmentNew Projects Launched To Find Young Film Talent in ChinaThe China Film Directors Guild, or CFDG, is teaming up with the country's media watchdog to find young directors.

The project, called CFDG Young Directors Support Program, will select five of the most talented young filmmakers in China.

The lucky ones will then work under the tutelage of renowned directors to produce their own big screen works.

Veteran director Feng Xiaogang is acting chairman for the first project.

He shares his thoughts on filmmaking and the project at the launching ceremony.

"Only now, with the film I'm producing, did I realize that I have just begun to get a touch for filmmaking. I have realized that the criteria for making films are very high. So young directors do need some support."The application period runs until January 20th next year.

All Chinese citizens aged between 18 and 38 with no more than two works shown in theatres are qualified for the programme.

Thirty individuals will be selected to attend a series of training sessions, with five finalists eventually receiving one-on-one guidance from veteran directors.

China's film market has been booming in recent years.

The Chinese box office has already surpassed the 40 billion yuan mark this year and an increasing number of bigger titles are still coming to cinemas.

Stars attend red carpet premiere of 'Mr. Six'

Stars have walked the red carpet for the premiere of Chinese film "Mr. Six" in Beijing.

Feng Xiaogang, who won the "Best Actor" award at the Golden Horse Film Festival a month ago, was joined by director Guan Hu, actress Xu Qing, and actors Wu Yifan and Li Yefeng.

"Today's premiere makes me think about the premieres I attended for my former movies. It has been two years since I directed movies. This time, I'm very honored to play in 'Mr. Six,' directed by Guan Hu. I really appreciate this experience and this premiere."The film is a modern tale of Mr Six, a middle aged former kingpin who reigned over the Beijing streets for years.

As he lives in a world that is bound to be destroyed by modernity, the film portrays the battle between him and a much younger drag-racing street gang leader, played by Wu Yifan.

Wu said the most challenging part of making the film for him was the pressure of acting with Feng.

"Actually, this kind of stubborn and honest person exist in all walks of life, but I think the perfect person to play Mr. Six is Feng Xiaogang. In terms of life experience and temperament, director Feng is the perfect person to play Mr. Six.""Mr Six" is set to hit Chinese theaters on December 24th.

New 'Star Wars' has biggest North American film debut of all time"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" has opened to the strongest North American debut of all time.

Revenue from the opening weekend is nearly 240 million dollars, beating the previous record holder, Jurassic World, by about 30 million.

Internationally, the film grossed 517 million dollar and is second to Jurassic World, which had a global total of 525 million following its first weekend of release earlier this year.

However, the dinosaurs had the added benefit of China.

"The Force Awakens" drew enormous pre-sales and the film was kept under lockdown from the press and critics until mere days before it was released to the public.

Reviews turned out to be stellar as did early audience reaction, who gave the film an A CinemaScore.
