To northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous region now, where a blizzard has lasted almost half a month in many parts of the province. It is the longest blizzard recorded there in a decade. In mountainous areas, snow is up to nearly two meters high, making repair work extraordinarily hard for electricity workers. Most of the equipment is located high up on the mountains, and workers have to reach it on foot. Moreover, during the just concluded three-day New Year holiday, lots of people visited Kanas lake, a very popular tourist destination of Altay in Xinjiang. Several avalanches took place, trapping tourists and vehicles. Local authorities have dispatched 8 machines to clear the road. Local weather authorities predict that more snow is expected to fall in the following days.
