【英语时差8,16】清凉的公车或电视广告可能有害身心(在线收听) |
A local English newspaper reported that Taipei mayor Hau Lung-bin promised more caution in the future when approving "sexually suggestive" advertising on public transportation. The mayor's words followed, of course, public complaints recently on the use (or exploitation, if you prefer) of women's figures in public advertisements. So, what are we to do when companies or individuals make us unhappy with their advertising? Should we swallow our discomfort and remain silent? Or, at least occasionally, should we shoot a few rockets into the air and make a fuss? Most of us enjoy the sight and presence of beautiful people, and are not apt to turn into a dragon and breathe fire over a pretty face or cute figure. We ought to ask, however, about the effect of sexually suggestive images in public venues. And we should realize that some images are damaging. I do not cotton to anyone reducing me to a single aspect of my life. If I were a girl or woman looking at those ads, I wonder how I'd feel. That my figure is what makes me important in life? That I must look like a cover girl to be thought attractive or cool? Those notions make for a sizable pile of horse manure. |
