Australia has welcomed being 2016 with a series of fireworks displayed across the nation. An estimated 1.6 million people flooded into central Sydney to watch the country’s largest New Year Eve’s display. In Brisbane, 30000 fireworks were launched from five barges while in Melbourne, a par technique display lit up much of that city’s skyline. A fire which tore through a 63-storey skyscraper in the United Arab Emirate is about 90% under control. All occupancies of the building have been evacuated and there is no indication as to what calls the blaze. Despite the size of the fire, only 14 people suffered minor injuries. One person had a non-fatal heart attack.
In Western Australia, a bushfire emergency warning has been issued for the Southwestern part of Secret Harbor in the city of Rockingham. The department of fire emergency services is warning people need to leave now and there is a threat to both property and lives.
Residents in Victoria’s surf coast who were evacuated yesterday as part of a bushfire warning have been allowed back to their homes. The blaze burning in the Otway ranges is still out of control but the changing conditions saw the flames turned away from towns ofKennett River, Grey River and Wongarra.
And Belgian police have detained further 30 people in connection with alleged plot to target Brussels on New Year’s Eve. Two more suspects who were detained yesterday are still being questioned. Authorities cancelled both cities’ New Year’s Eve celebrations, saying threat was too great for them to go ahead. |
