Mapping out the country's next five years. The top legislature approved the country's economic and social development blueprint for the 2016-2020 period, setting China's average economic growth rate target above 6.5 percent. And lawmakers' suggestions were well received by the government.

"I feel that the government is getting more practical and efficient. My proposal is on vocational education, I get feedback from the government on my proposal," NPC deputy Chen Zhilin said.

"The government attaches great importance to people's livelihoods every year, and this year we can tell from the new five-year plan that the government is very determined," NPC deputy Cui Wei said.

Lawmakers also passed the Charity Law, which is fundamental and comprehensive in its structure.

It provides an important legal basis to carry forward socialist core values and Chinese traditional virtues, as well as promoting the healthy development of philanthropy in China.

"We need to study and promote the law, be well prepared prior to the enforcement of the law, and take its implementation as an opportunity to increase the development of China's charity and charity law construction to a new level," NPC Standing Committee Chairman Zhang Dejiang said.

Improving people's livelihoods is also high on the government's reform agenda. Measures listed in the latest five-year plan range from eradicating poverty and promoting health to improving education and adding more jobs.

"My main focus for this year is to improve grassroot public services..." NPC deputy Wang Zhongbing said.

China is aiming to double both the size of its economy and, more importantly, its per capita income by 2020 from 2010 levels.

Another ambitious goal is to lift the poorest of its people out of poverty.

The 13th five-year plan places more emphasis on the prosperity of China's nearly 1.4 billion people..Law makers hope that growth can be translated into benefits for the masses rather than fortunes for a few.
