CCTV9英语新闻:German President Gauck is upbeat about relations with China(在线收听) |
The German link with Tongji University goes back to 1907, when the German government and three German physicians founded the Tongji German Medical School.
Today the institution stands as a beacon of Chinese-German academic and scientific cooperation, from architecture to design, from automobiles to foreign languages. And during cherry blossom season, the university welcomed a very special guest.
Gauck spoke about his feelings about China during this visit. He touched on the prospects for the two countries, from economy to international affairs. He also stressed the ecological challenges faced by China, and shared some of Germany’s experience in developing its green technology. His words gave students much to think about.
“I’m quite impressed by the environment topic mentioned by the President. We are facing this pressing problem now. Being a college student, I think it’s important for us to bear in mind and take responsibility,” a Tongji University student said.
Later Gauck visited the largest German library in China, which opened just two months ago on campus. His itinerary also included the Jewish refugee museum. During World War II, nearly 20,000 Jews who fled Europe found a haven in Shanghai. Gauck’s next and final stop is Xi’an.
The visit reflects the frequency of high-level political exchanges between the two countries. According to China’s Foreign Ministry, Sino-German relations have deepened recently, with 110 cooperative projects currently being implemented. |
