In the FIFA corruption scandal the former President of Honduas, Rafael Callegjas, has pleased guilty to charges of conspiracy and taking bribes over the awarding of broadcasting rights for major tournaments. The 72-year-old had been a part of the organisations television and marketing committee and entered the plea at a court in Brooklyn after being indicted last December. He also agreed to forfeit 650,000 dollars after telling the judge he accepted bribes and distributed money to others.
Sentencing will be on August 5th with a maximum imprisonment of 20 years tied to each charge. In May last year 20 FIFA officials were arrested in Zurich as part of an operation by the FBI in their on-going investigation into world football governing body. |
