CCTV9英语新闻:Taiwan delegation in Beijing to discuss telecom fraud case(在线收听

A delegation from Taiwan has arrived in Beijing for talks, amid rows with the Chinese Mainland on the recent telecom fraud cases.

The Ministry of Public Security says the delegation from Taiwan, consisting of senior judicial officials, is here to discuss cross-Strait cooperation on the fight against telecom fraud.

In the past two weeks, Kenyan authorities have deported 122 suspects to the Chinese Mainland, including 45 from Taiwan. Kenyan police say they are suspected of swindling over 6 million yuan, or 1 million US dollars, from Chinese Mainland citizens.

Authorities from Taiwan argued that the suspects from Taiwan should have been sent back to the island for trials. But just a few days later, in a separate telecom fraud case also linked to China, authorities from Taiwan freed 20 suspects after they were deported from Malaysia, citing a lack of evidence. This move has angered the Chinese Mainland authorities, since most victims are from the Mainland. The head of the delegation, Chen Wen-chi, said the two sides will work together to solve the case.

"We come to the mainland for coordination, which is in accordance with the agreement on joint crime fighting and mutual judicial assistance. We hope both sides can work together on crime investigation, share the work and help each other to deal with this case. We hope we can set up a reasonable and normalized mechanism which can be used to deal with similar cases in the future," Chen said.
