CCTV9英语新闻:Concerts held in Palmyra's legendary amphitheatre(在线收听) |
Another concert has recently been held in the legendary amphitheater in the Syrian city of Palmyra. This marked the Roman theater's second event in two days.
Singing folk songs and playing traditional music, this concert was known as The Gate of the Sun. 6 different top orchestras and choirs in Syria, including the Syrian National Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Choir of the High Institute of Music, were gathered under one roof and gave a 2-hour stunning performance to around 1,500 audiences.
It’s the biggest event held in the amphitheater since the crisis broke out in the country, that's in terms of the number of performing groups as well as participating audiences.
Last year, during the occupation of ISIL, terrorists brutally killed 25 Syrian army soldiers in this very theater. On May 6th, however, Syrian people honored those who died in the battlefield through singing and cheering.
"As we all know, the spirits of the martyr’s of Palmyra are hovering out there. Their images are still implanted in our brains. Palmyra astonished the world when it was taken by terrorism and it also astonished the world when the Syrian army brought it back with the help from our allies. Today, Palmyra is restoring its past glory by the Syrian youths who bring back the normalcy," said Bishr Yazigi, Syrian Minister of Tourism.
This is the second event held in the ancient theater in two days. On May 5th, it was the venue for a concert performed by the Symphony Orchestra of St Petersburg's Mariinsky Theater.
Ever since Palmyra fell into ISIL’s hands, terrorists had wrecked havoc to the ancient city and antics in the museum of Palmyra. After a massive military operation which lasted for about a month, the Syrian government finally restored control of Palmyra in March. |
