This is AP News Minute. Hurricane Matthew sideswiped Florida's Atlantic coast Friday, toppling trees onto homes and knocking out power to more than 800,000. Authorities say the danger's far from over with hundreds of miles of coastline in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina still under threat of torrential rain and deadly storm surge as the storm pushes north. A helicopter apparently broke apart as it fell from the sky then crashed and burst into flames in a twin cities suburb. The pilot and his passenger died in the crash. US Secreatry of State John Kerry says Russia and Syria should face a war crimes investigator for their attacks on Syrian civilians. Speaking alongside the visiting French prime minister, Kerry said Syrian forces struck another hospital overnight, killing at 20 and wounding 100. Columbian president Juan Manuel Santos won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end a civil war that killed more than 200000 Columbians. The award came just days after Columbian voters narrowly rejected a peace deal that Santos helped bring about. Matthew Burgoyne, The Associated Press with AP News Minute. |
