1. President Obama says he is cautiously optimistic about the successor, president-elect Donald Trump. Obama spoke after meeting with the German chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Thursday. He also said he hopes Trump will stand up to Russia when it deviates from the International norms. 

2. Meanwhile vice president-elect Mike Pence meets the rounds on capitol hill, sitting down with Republican and Democratic leaders. He's spent more than a decade in congress before he became Indiana's governor. 

3. The US director of national intelligence says he has formally submitted his resignation. James Clapper said he planned to retire at the end of the Obama administration. He told the House and intelligence committee on Thursday that he submitted his letter resignation on Wednesday evening.

4. And the cross-country runner  was able to finish the NCAA regional race after he was knocked off his feet by a deer at the DeSales University in Pennsylvania. The deer struck his stomach as other deer ran across the course.
