Donald Trump said on Wednesday he would “be leaving” his business empire “in total” as he sought to address growing concern about potential conflicts of interest related to his business ties around the world.
The US president-elect made the announcement on Twitter, but he gave no details on how he planned to separate himself from running his businesses other than to say “legal documents are being crafted”.
In the past, Mr Trump has suggested he would hand over operations to his adult children, and in the series of tweets that he would hold a news conference with his children on December 15 to “discuss the fact that I will be leaving my great business in total in order to fully focus on running the country”.
Although the US president has far less stringent conflict-of-interest rules than cabinet secretaries, wealthy businesspeople who have taken cabinet posts have traditionally put their business interests in a blind trust or sold off their holdings. Mr Trump made no mention of taking either option.
“While I am not mandated to do this under the law, I feel it is visually important, as president, to in no way have a conflict of interest with my various businesses,” he wrote on Twitter. “Hence, legal documents are being crafted which take me completely out of business operations. The presidency is a far more important task!”
The real estate tycoon has faced criticism since his election victory that he could use his time in the White House to exert undue influence that would directly affect his wide-ranging business interests. Those business ties could also leave the presidency open to influence from foreign interests.
In an interview with the New York Times last week, Mr Trump dismissed concerns that his foreign business ventures could present the risk of conflicts of interest.
“The law’s totally on my side, meaning, the president can’t have a conflict of interest.” He added: “I can be president of the United States and run my business 100 per cent.”
But he also hinted during the interview that he was already handing day-to-day control to his children: “I like to sign cheques so I know what is going on as opposed to pressing a computer button, boom, and thousands of cheques are automatically sent?.?.?.?But I am phasing that out now, and handing that to Eric Trump and Don Trump and Ivanka Trump for the most part, and some of my executives”.
