Viacom, the parent company of MTV and many other American cable television channels, has struck a deal with China's biggest search engine to provide television and music content to Baidu's customers. The Baidu search engine has been called the Google of China, and their web site gets more than a quarter of a billion page views each day. It is especially popular among users searching for MP3 files of Chinese pop music. While some MTV is broadcast in southern China, American entertainment companies have had a difficult time getting much of their programming on Chinese television, so Internet delivery over Baidu was an attractive option.
