Donald J. Trump has been sworn in as the 45th President of the United States, giving an address that echoed similar sentiments from his campaign speeches. Trump was joined on stage by his entire family and his Vice President Mike Pence. The Obamas also attended and later departed from Joint Base Andrews for a vacation in Palm Springs, California.

Protests erupted following Trump’s inaugural address at the capital as riot police pepper sprayed the crowds. Loud bangs and smoke rose as protesters smashed windows and stormed the streets.

A defense lawyer in New York has entered a not-guilty plea on behalf of Mexican drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. Prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty as a condition of the extradition of Guzmán, who was the convicted leader of the Sinaloa Cartel.

And rescue crews located up to eight people alive Friday in avalanche that crashed a hotel in Italy. Footage from Italian firefighters showed a child and a woman being pulled from the rubble.
