2016年CRI From Sculpture to Installation Exhibits How Artwork Is Created(在线收听

Do you know how stainless steel sculptures are made? An exhibition titled Unbreakable Poise will show visitors the story behind these finely-made shining sculptures.

Qi Yafeng's solo exhibition, which opened on Sunday afternoon in Today Art Museum in Beijing, is composed of four indoor installations and five big outdoor sculptures.

Matthew Jarratt, a renowned British curator and a former member of the Arts Council England, curates this event. He described the ongoing exhibition as providing the whole timeline of his creative process.

"When you just see an outdoor sculpture, you don't maybe understand that story that starts off the little clay model. The artist is trying to make it work and maybe having some success, but if (it) doesn't work then you have to change it. But some of them he's left unfinished, so again we can see the making process. So it's very important not all just the finished work; it's about people's understanding the skill of how these things are made, so we try to bring that whole creative process in, so people can see from the beginning to the end."

According to the curator, Qi Yafeng's exhibition offers an insight into taking the hand-made crafted traditions into new areas of contemporary sculpture.

Visitors exploring the exhibition will be accompanied by factory sounds throughout the tour.

Matthew Jarratt explains:

"The curatorial idea is to bring the factory into the gallery. So we get an atmosphere of making people hitting metal, big structure is being made, and in contrast that with really finely finished beautiful stainless steel pieces that are at the end of the gallery."

It is the artist's first exhibition following his over twenty years' dedication in artistic creations. The exhibited works all reflect the artist's comprehension about philosophy and religion.

Qi Yafeng's solo exhibition is scheduled to run until the 19th of June.
