Death toll of a sunken South Korean ferry rose rapidly Sunday as divers kept entering the hull of the submerged vessel while hundreds of ships were scouring the waters. As of Sunday afternoon, two more bodies were found in waters near the site of the accident, raising the death toll to 52, according to the pan-government emergency management headquarters which has been coordinating rescue efforts. Four more bodies were discovered and retrieved from inside the hull and the waters. So far 56 people have been confirmed dead, and 246 still missing. The number of rescued remained unchanged at 174. Malaysia and Australia are to discuss their next moves concerning the six-week-long search for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight. Australian officials say the current underwater search for the plane, focused on a tight 10 km circle of the sea floor, could be completed within a week. They released a series of images of the robotic submarine, Bluefin-21, on Sunday showing the autonomous underwater vehicle being prepared for deployment at sea. Meanwhile, Malaysian authorities say the prime ministers of the two countries will discuss on Monday the next step of the search operation. |
