Investigators from the US Senate have delivered a damning indictment of CIA interrogation practices carried out after the 9/11 attacks.

In a 500-page summary, the Senate Intelligence Committee accuses the agency of inflicting pain and suffering on prisoners with tactics that went well beyond legal limits.

The report found that the torture tactics used by CIA, including "waterboarding," were more brutal than what the agency has previously acknowledged.

The interrogation program was devised by a couple of CIA contractors to squeeze information from suspects after the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001.

The program ran from 2002 to 2006 and involved questioning al-Qaeda and other captives in secret detention facilities in various countries.
