China's Foreign Ministry says Chinese leaders are expected to attend the state funeral for the former Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew. However, details on who will be present at the Sunday service have not been released. Singapore is in seven days of national mourning following the death of its founding father of the nation state. Lee passed away yesterday morning at the age of 91. His body is to lie in state at parliament from Wednesday to Saturday, after a private family wake on Monday and Tuesday. World leaders have been paying tribute to Lee Kuan Ye, who served as the city-state's prime minister for 31 years. Chinese President Xi Jinping says Lee was a widely respected strategist and statesman. UN chief Ban Ki-moon is describing him as a "legendary figure in Asia." US President Barack Obama has called him a "giant of history". China's top political advisor has met with a delegation from Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party and Komei Party. Yu Zhengsheng, chair of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, has told the Japanese delegation the Chinese side is hoping the Abe administration is going to abide by the four principles signed between the two sides. That agreement has allowed for a resumption of high-level talks. It also allows for the two sides to hold differing opinions about the status of the Diaoyu Islands. |
