英伦广角 特蕾莎梅首次欧盟峰会坚定脱欧(在线收听) |
The Prime Minister has moved to see off her rebellion in her back bench. She’s had the key Brexit debate in the Commons later today. Theresa May would allow MPs to back Labor calls for more scrutiny of her Brexit strategy before she triggers Article 50 to begin withdraw. Ms. May says the referendum result must be respected, and the government’s negotiating strategy should not be undermined. So why is she doing this? Let’s go to Westminster and our senior political correspondent Beth Rigby gives us the inside track. Newly Evans, you some did a perfectly that and the issue Theresa May had was, or has is that Labor’s day have tabled a motion insisting that the government give the parliament, give MPs a chance to properly scrutinize what her Brexit strategy might look like before she triggers, as you say, Eamonn, article 50 which are the formal negotiation talks next March the latest. MPs very unhappy that while Britons have voted to leave the EU, although parliament doesn’t seem to have any saying in the negotiation strategy that Theresa May is going to put forward. And her problem is that, if it was just Labor who had this issue, then she could ignore parliament. But she’s got load of MPs on her own benches pre-European MPs and even people that wanted to leave the EU think they should have to say. So what does she have to do? She has had to have a climb-out and table an amendment saying that she is going to allow this Labor motion to pass potentially, but she insists the amendment that doesn’t intend to undermine the negotiation position of the government. Now this is all parliamentary ping-pong. What does it actually mean? What it means is that the parliament might get more scrutiny of what her negotiations might look like, and it also tells you that she’s gonna have a hell of ride through parliament and with her MPs to get this Brexit negotiation through, because she’s only got a working majority of 16 MPs, and she’s got many, many more on her back benches enough figure who want more scrutiny over her Brexit strategy. |
