Chinese President Xi Jinping has described his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump's ongoing state visit to China as "successful and historic." Meeting with the press alongside Trump on Thursday after their talks at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing earlier in the morning, Xi says the talks are constructive, with many fruitful results achieved. "The meeting between President Trump and I sets the tone and lays a new blueprint, and paves a solid foundation for the future development of China-U.S. relations. And we will work with the U.S. side to achieve more results when promoting bilateral ties, and bring more benefits to the people from both countries and people around the world," says Xi. The two leaders have agreed to maintain the leading role of head-of-state diplomacy in developing bilateral relations, and increase exchanges at various levels. They also agree to give full play to the four high-level dialogue mechanisms, in addition to expanding interactions and cooperation in economics and trade, military affairs, law enforcement, people-to-people exchanges and other areas. Xi Jinping also says that both sides have reiterated their firm commitment to achieving denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula and solving the nuclear issue through dialogue and negotiation. "Regarding the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, we reaffirm our commitment to denuclearization and to uphold the international nuclear non-proliferation regime. Both sides will fully and strictly implement UN Security Council resolutions and stay committed to solving the issue through peaceful dialogue and consultation, finding the way to long-term peace and stability in the region and keeping communication and cooperation in this regard," says Xi. U.S. President Donald Trump has thanked Xi Jinping for a warm welcome to China and says he looks forward to building a stronger U.S.-China relationship, as well as closer friendships between the people of both countries. "The United States, working with China and other regional partners, has an incredible opportunity to advance the cause of peace, security and prosperity all across the world. It's a very special time, and we do indeed have that very, very special opportunity. A great responsibility has been placed on our shoulders, it's truly a great responsibility. And I hope we can rise to the occasion and help our countries and our citizens reach their highest destinies and their fullest potentials," says Trump. Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for a three-day state visit to China, the third stop of his five-nation tour of Asia. After their arrival on Wednesday, the US President and First Lady Melania Trump toured the Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City, in downtown Beijing, accompanied by Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan. A grand welcoming ceremony was held for Trump outside the Great Hall of the People on Thursday morning, before his meetings with Xi Jinping and other Chinese leaders. |
