White House national security adviser John Bolton is telling Russia's ambassador that better relations between the two countries require addressing U.S. concerns on election meddling, an alleged chemical attack in Britain, and the situations in Ukraine and Syria.

It is the first meeting between Bolton and Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov.

Bolton says it is in the interest of both countries to have better relations, but Russia must address allegations that Moscow interfered in the 2016 U.S. election and poisoned a former Russian spy in Britain. Moscow has denied both allegations.

Meantime, White House has denied there is a rift between Trump and his Secretary of Defense over the Syria strike.

It denies James Mattis advised Trump against striking Syria before seeking Congress sanction.

The US, in coordination with the UK and France, fired a barrage of missiles against three targets in Syria that it alleged contained, manufactured or researched chemical weapons. The attack was carried out without sanction from the UN Security Council, nor was it based on any findings from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. At the same time, the Kremlin says Moscow expects more hostility from the west to continue in the future, adding it is the reality Russia is dealing with while prioritizing their own interests.
