all hands were in a panic; and to attempt snatching at the boom to stay it, seemed madness.  大家都象发狂一样,乱作一团;想抓着那帆杠使它停下来。

It flew from right to left, and back again, almost in one ticking of a watch, and every instant seemed on the point of snapping into splinters.  几乎时钟每滴答一下,帆杠就从左到右来回摆了一下,似乎随时都有断成碎片的可能。

Nothing was done, and nothing seemed capable of being done;  毫无办法,似乎也想不出什么办法来;

those on deck rushed toward the bows, and stood eyeing the boom as if it were the lower jaw of an exasperated whale.  甲板上的人们都争相奔到船头,站在那里呆望着那只帆杠,它仿佛就是一条怒不可遏的巨鲸的下颚。

In the midst of this consternation, Queequeg dropped deftly to his knees, and crawling under the path of the boom,  在这种惊惶失措中,魁魁格灵巧地跪倒在甲板上,在帆杠晃来晃去的地方爬着,

whipped hold of a rope, secured one end to the bulwarks, and then flinging the other like a lasso,  猛地抓住一根索子,他把索子的一端缚到舷墙上,然后等帆杠扫过他头顶的时候,他就象作套索一般急忙将另一端一抛,

caught it round the boom as it swept over his head, and at the next jerk, the spar was that way trapped, and all was safe.  把帆杠兜住了,他再猛地一拉,那根圆材就被这样套住,一切平安无事了。

The schooner was run into the wind, and while the hands were clearing away the stern boat,  当这条纵帆船望风驶去,大家正在收拾船尾的时候,

Queequeg, stripped to the waist, darted from the side with a long living arc of a leap.  魁魁格赤裸着上身,真象个长弧形那么纵身一跳打船侧冲了出去。

For three minutes or more he was seen swimming like a dog,  人们看到他象只狗似的游了三四分钟,

throwing his long arms straight out before him, and by turns revealing his brawny shoulders through the freezing foam.  两条长胳膊直向前面摔去,在冰冷的浪沫里挨次地现出他那结实的左右肩。

I looked at the grand and glorious fellow, but saw no one to be saved.  我望着这个伟大而光荣的伙伴,可是,却看到并没有救起什么人来。

The greenhorn had gone down. Shooting himself perpendicularly from the water,  那个毛头小子已经沉到海里去了。

Queequeg, now took an instant's glance around him, and seeming to see just how matters were,  这时,魁魁格从水里笔直地冒了出来,眼睛迅疾地四下一瞥,似乎是要弄清一下情况,

dived down and disappeared.  又潜进水里。消失了。

A few minutes more, and he rose again, one arm still striking out, and with the other dragging a lifeless form.  再过几分钟,他又冒了出来,一只手仍在划水,另一只手拖着一个毫无生气的人体。

The boat soon picked them up.  船上的人立刻把他们拉上来。

The poor bumpkin was restored.  可怜那个乡巴佬苏醒过来了。

All hands voted Queequeg a noble trump; the captain begged his pardon.  大家都盛赞魁魁格是个了不起的好汉;船长也来对他道歉。

From that hour I clove to Queequeg like a barnacle; yea, till poor Queequeg took his last long dive. 从那时起,我就象狗虱子一样死扳住魁魁格不放;而且直扳到可怜的魁魁格永远潜进水里为止。
