In his report to Congress General David Petraeus says he hopes to withdraw roughly 30,000 US troops by next summer. That's back to pre-surge levels. He also said last winter's build-up has met military objectives in large measure. Senator Larry Craig's attorneys have filed papers to withdraw his guilty plea in an airport sex sting. The documents argued Craig entered the plea under stress from the media. The Idaho Republican earlier announced plans to resign September 30th. Officials say Gabrielle is now just a 'nuisance'. The storm has been downgraded to a tropical depression as it pulls away from the North Carolina coast. It caused some flooding but didn't do any real damage on the Outer Banks with winds now 35 miles an hour. Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel says he won't be doing anymore campaigning. The Republican announced he will retire from the Senate and not seek any elected office in 2008. Hagel's exit means there will be one more seat minority Republicans will be forced to defend. |
