Uruguay ambassador calls for closer ties under the Belt and Road Initiative

China and Uruguay have agreed to expand and deepen cooperation as bilateral relations have been stable since the two sides established diplomatic ties 30 years ago.

Foreign Ministers Wang Yi and Rodolfo Nin Novoa reached consensus on new areas of cooperation in Beijing during the weekend.

The two sides signed cooperation documents on the Belt and Road Initiative, service trade and other fields.

Nin Novoa says Uruguay is the first country in the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) that signed cooperation documents on the Belt and Road Initiative with China and is ready to help China and the Mercosur countries to build closer ties.

Bilateral trade last year saw a 29% increase over the previous year. China's main exports to Uruguay include clothing, communication devices, and computers. It's also the top importer of Uruguay's beef, wood, soybeans, and wool.

For more on this, CRI's Ge Anna speaks with H.E. Fernando Lugris, Ambassador to China from Uruguay about the importance of the China-Uruguay relations.
