Through music, poetry, and song, a group of artists explores the Muslim-America experience. The show at Washington’s Kennedy Center is called Now You See Us. It aims to shatter negative views of Muslim Americans in a post-9/11 World by exploring life in America for the Muslim Diaspora.

The performance centers on the challenges and complexities Muslim-Americans face and their contributions. We’re presenting a program that shines a really positive light on Muslim culture in the history of Muslim innovation in culture. Now You See Us features well-known Muslim American artists eager to focus on the positive and on similarities rather than differences.

An opportunity like this is a reminder for most of them to look at America in 2018; am the United States as much as anybody else’s. I think it’s high time that not only do we accept that, I think we also embrace it so it’s no longer, it shouldn’t, it should no longer be about tolerance. Well I mean given the current, you know, geopolitical climate, it’s super important for people to represent their people and where they’re from accurately.

There is a lot of marginalization of our voices and I’m really excited tonight to really uplift the beauty of our heritage. The performance offered new insights, says this audience member. I’m walking away and I’m going to talk to my friends about some of the things that I heard tonight. I have a different perspective. Artists say the performance gives them a platform to emphasize that being American is about far more than people’s differences.
