A somber crowd gathered in Washington to remember the life and legacy of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.Speaking via video from London his fiancee Hatice Cengiz had a message for President Trump —Mr. Trump, I would like him to Turkey’s legal efforts in trying to bring light to this situation and to discover the whereabouts of his body.I would like to thank everyone who organized this event—Jamal’s friends and loved ones and those who support this association. Other speakers called on United States to use its leverage over Saudi Arabia’s rulers to hold those who ordered the killing accountable.

I call upon President Trump to speak clearly and unequivocally about what has happened and about what the United States is prepared to do by way of response: not balancing a death of one man, brutally in the consulate of another country, in another country, against military interests. This is no time for that kind of balancing act; this is a time to speak morally. President Trump said he is not prepared to end US arm sales to Saudi Arabia, and is waiting for more facts to decide what action to take. More than 100 writers and actors from around the world signed a letter calling on the United Nations to conduct an independent investigation into the killing.

Thomas Malia of Pen American read from the letter: “The murder of a journalist inside a diplomatic facility would constitute nothing less than an act of state terror intended to intimidate journalists, dissidents and exiled critics the world over.”

Other speakers noted if the purpose of Jamal Khashoggi killing was to silence a moderate critic, there are many who will be making sure his legacy of advocating for peaceful reform in the Arab world stays very much alive.
