Three kinds of fruit the graders had to watch out for: decayed oranges, split oranges,  and "culls."

A cull is an orange that is too large or too small, or badly shaped or sunburned.
Quickly the graders rolled the fruit over with gloved hands.
The decayed or split fruit was thrown aside. The culls were tossed upon a separate belt
which carried them away to be sold at a low price.
Jane felt her head whirl as she watched the wide, moving belts with their loads of jostling oranges.
Suddenly she gave a little gasp of surprise.
"Why, the oranges are disappearing!" she cried.
And so they were. "Each orange," said the guide, "as it travels along, finds an opening exactly its size.
Through this opening it rolls down into a bin where a packer can easily reach it."
"Why, Mother," Jane exclaimed, "it's almost like the game I used to play!
Don't you remember the little box I have at home, with tiny balls in it, that have to be shaken until they find the little nests that fit them?"
