 Suddenly a cry rang through the building. 突然,一声尖叫响彻大楼。

When the men started up and seized their swords, the monster fled, but the Danes found that one of their bravest warriors had been killed. 当人们起身拿剑时,怪物逃走了,但丹麦人发现他们的一个勇士被杀了。
Then there was great mourning in the hall, and messengers were sent to tell the sad news to the king. 于是大厅里一片哀鸣,使者被派去告诉国王这个不幸的消息。
"Oh, if Beowulf had only been there !" cried Hrothgar, when he heard what had happened. “哦,如果贝奥武夫当时在场就好了!”
Some of the men then ran to wake Beowulf, who was asleep in the king's palace. 一些人跑去叫醒在王宫里熟睡的贝奥武夫。
Surprised at the sudden call, Beowulf and his warriors hastened to the king. 贝奥武夫和他的战士们对这突然的很是惊讶,急忙跑到国王面前。
"Oh, Beowulf," said Hrothgar, "a great sorrow has come to us. “哦,贝奥武夫,”赫罗斯加说,“我们遭受了巨大的不幸。
A monster from the lake has killed one of my bravest companions!" 湖上的怪物杀死了我的一位勇士!”
"Do not weep, O King," said Beowulf. “别哭了,国王,”贝奥武夫说。
"Let me see the track of this monster and give me one day, and I promise to slay this enemy, also." “让我看看这个怪物的行踪,给我一天时间,我保证也要杀死这个敌人。”
Following the tracks, Beowulf and the king came to the shore of the dark lake. 贝奥武夫和国王沿着小路来到了暗湖边。
Then the great hero once more made ready for battle. 于是这位伟大的英雄又一次做好了战斗的准备。
He put on his coat of steel and his helmet, which no blade could cut. In his strong right hand he carried his gleaming sword. 他穿上钢铁外衣,戴上刀锋无法割伤的头盔。他有力的右手握着闪闪发光的剑。
