Obesity is a problem everywhere. Obesity. And obesity crisis. Obesity problem. Obesity. Obesity crisis. Obesity is a global epidemic. The truth is there is no obesity crisis. What? Our fixation on weight is keeping us from doing things to help people get healthy. Obesity researchers hate it when I say this, but their own data show that obesity is not going to kill us. Most obese people don't have shorter lifespans than non-obese people and actually it's the underweight people who are at most at risk. Obesity only really leads to shorter lifespans at the very highest weights.

So why does everybody think obesity is deadly? Well, one reason is that obesity is correlated with three different things that we do know is deadly and they do shorten lifespan. Being sedentary. Having lower income. And not getting enough medical care. Everyone, the media, the medical community operate from the unwavering assumption that obesity is deadly. So any evidence that comes along that contradicts that, they just write it off. It is true that obese people are more likely to get diabetes and cardiovascular disease. But there are two things you need to realize. First of all, the obesity paradox. When obese people get these diseases, they're less likely to die of them than non-obese people. What? They're less likely to die of them than non-obese people. And second, to reduce your risk for those diseases, you don't actually have to get thin. You just need to exercise.
