How her face did light up when she saw Ivor and Marya!

Her pleasures were few, and seeing these two grandchildren was perhaps the greatest of them all.

She was eager to hear about the farm. Was the wheat ripening? How many acres had her son Jan put into potatoes?

So Ivor was in his last year at school. He's a man, this Ivor! And so Marya did the churning, helped with the chickens,

A cloud gathered on her face. No, lad. Tis too hard for your grandfather to push my chair away down the river.

Listen! said Ivor. He leaned down to whisper something in her ear, then changed his mind. You just wait! he said, and winked slyly at her.

She guessed his thought and smiled happily at him. It was Ivor's way, she knew, to think of others besides himself.

About midway of its long length it passes under the three bridges of Warsaw, the capital of the country.
