Fear in Uganda’s Gay Community amid Death Penalty Push,Arrests

Twenty-one-year-old Shamim Pretty, not her real name, has taken shelter in this kampala’s safe space for the past three years.

21岁的Shamim Pretty（化名）过去三年里都生活在坎帕拉的安全区里。 

She says her mother kicked her out of her home when Shamim was 16 and called the police because she is transgender.

她说她16岁的时候，妈妈就把她从家中赶了出来，并且还叫了警察，而这只是因为她是跨性别者。 

When they took me to the police, my mother was there waiting for me.They really mistreated me.

“他们把我带给警察时，我的妈妈就在那里等我。他们虐待了我。” 

There was an officer who was very homophobic. He got a hold of me and beat me up.

有一名警官十分恐同。他一把抓住我，还打了我。 

He called in the media and in front of the press they took my clothes off.

他还叫了媒体过来，在他们面前把我的衣服脱掉。” 

LGBT Support Group Ice Breakers Uganda set up the safe house in 2012,

just one year before lawmakers vote to increase the punishment for homosexuality from life in prison to death.

Under western pressure, Uganda in 2014 overturned the anti-homosexuality act, but gay sex remains illegal.

And members of the LGBT community are routinely harassed and shunned in a country where many revile homosexuality.

You don’t have anywhere to go. You don’t have money for rent. You don’t have what.

So we offer spaces, yeah, usually for one month, so that you go back on your feet as you look for money 200 somewhere else.

Earlier this month, Uganda’s Ethics Minister announced the bill would be reintroduced raising fears of renewed attacks on the gay community.

Already you know, most people do not have homes. They do not have education.

大家都知道，大多数人没有家，上不了学， 

They are not employed. They are homeless.

So when something like this comes, it threatens even the little safety that they had.

所以像这样的事情一旦发生，他们仅有的一丁点儿安全区也会受到威胁。” 

A Ugandan government spokesman denied any plan to reintroduce what some call "Kill the gays" bill.

乌干达政府发言人表示他们没有任何打算要重启大家称之为“杀死同性恋者”法案。 

Even so, the LGBT community sees an ominous sign in the arrest of 16 gay activists last week who simply possessed condoms and anti-HIV medicines.

即便如此，上周发生的16个同性恋者逮捕案也让LGBT群体忧心忡忡。这16个同性恋者仅仅因为有避孕套和抗艾滋病病毒药物而被逮捕。

You’re out and then you’re thinking, yeah, letting loose.

So it’s you have to be under caution, the cautious side all the time.

For now, Uganda’s LGBT Support Groups are offering training on what to do in case of arrest and providing a place to hide from persecution.
