Declining Fish Stocks Threaten Cambodian Way of Life

Mer Ker, 67, has been fishing since he was 20, he’s been out on the rivers in early morning.

It is very hard to fish nowadays.

There are not many fish, unlike before, this is how much I got since early morning.

Cambodia’s growing population changes in the lake’s usual rise and fall.

Dam construction and indiscriminate fishing are some of the reasons why the fish catch is changing according to a 2018 study by the Cambodian fishery administration.

Usually the water recedes around November, but this year it was earlier.

The farm-raised fish is not as delicious as a river fish, it’s very sweet and tender.

For now people are willing to pay more for river fish.

But with catches declining noticeably that may not always be an option.
