Iran-backed militiamen have withdrawn from the U.S. embassy compound in Baghdad following clashes with American security forces, which the U.S. blames on Tehran. At Fort Bragg, North Carolina, U.S. troops from the 82nd airborne division have begun to deploy to the Middle East amid the rise in tensions.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking immunity from corruption charges, a move that could delay any trial until after march elections, when he hopes to have a majority coalition in the Israeli parliament that will shield him from prosecution.

Security was tight at New Jersey's Metlife Stadium as thousands of Jews gathered to celebrate a major religious event, the completion of the reading of The Babylonian Talmud. Officials say more than 50 law agencies were involved in security planning for the event.
