Prosecutors have charged a Minneapolis police officer with third degree murder and manslaughter in the death of George Floyd, an African American who died Monday while in police custody. A witness recorded the officer, Derek Chauvin, with his knee pressed against Floyd's neck while Floyd was face down on the ground in handcuffs.

Minnesota governor Tim Walz described the response to this week's protest over Floyd's death as an "abject failure" and said the state would take over the response. He also apologized for the arrest of a CNN news crew that was covering the city's unrest.
