A senior virologist has said "it is impossible" to synthesize the novel coronavirus, and even more ridiculous to claim it had escaped from a biosafety lab in Wuhan.

一位资深病毒学家表示，合成新冠病毒“是不可能的”，而更荒谬的是声称其是从武汉一个生物安全实验室流出的。

Yuan Zhiming is president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Wuhan Branch and a researcher with the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

袁志明是中国科学院武汉分院院长，也是武汉病毒学研究所的研究员。

He notes the institution has rigorous regulations and mechanisms in place.

他指出，该机构（武汉病毒学研究所）有严格的规章制度。

"As people who carry out the virus study, we clearly know what kind of research is going on at the institute and how the institute manages the viruses and the samples. As we said early on, there is no way that the virus came from us. We have a strict regulatory regiment, we have a code of conduct for research."

“实际上我们很清楚，做这个研究的人很清楚，我们知道研究所它是开展了哪些病毒研究，这个研究所是怎么样管理病毒的，或者管理它的样品的。所以我们一早就说，这病毒绝对不可能是从我们这边出来的。我们有严格的管理制度和科研行为准则。”

Yuan made the comments in response to recent speculations by politicians and media from the United States claiming that the virus had originated from the labs in Wuhan due to poor management.

针对近期美国政界及媒体称新冠病毒源自管理不善的武汉实验室这一猜测，袁志明做出上述回应。

Officials say no new confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus disease were reported in central China's Hubei Province Saturday.
