Former PM Tony Abbott was among those who signed the petition, despite launching the program while in office.

Fairfax editorial staff in Sydney and Melbourne will strike until Monday, after the company announced the equivalent of 120 full-time jobs will go.

The positions will be axed from the Sydney morning herald, the financial review and the age in a cost-cutting exercise.

The media, entertainment and arts alliance believes the cuts amount to one-quarter of the editorial workforce.
