Crews are working to control a blaze in New South Wales that has destroyed at least one home. The fire ripped through nearly 2,500 hectares in just a few hours near Tarago, north east of Canberra. Water bombing aircraft are helping crews on the ground to try to contain the fire.

The search for missing Malaysia airlines flight MH370 has been suspended. The Australian, Malaysian and Chinese governments say despite the best science available, they've been unable to find the plane. Authorities searched 120,000 square kilometres of the Indian Ocean for the plane that disappeared in March 2014.

A woman who was rescued along with her three sons from a Japanese ski field is an Australian doctor. The 57 year old and her 3 sons spent the night in sub-zero temperatures 1,600 metres above sea level in the ski town of Nozawa Onsen. They were taken to hospital, but are said to be in good health.

And 18th seed Sam Stosur has lost her opening round match of the Australian Open. She was beaten in three sets by Britain's Heather Watson 6-3, 3-6, 6-love. Stosur famously struggles on home turf carrying first-round losses from Brisbane and Sydney into the first major of the year.
