Terrorists killed Four Russian Diplomats

An Iraqi insurgent group linked to al-Qaeda says it has killed four Russian diplomats kidnapped three weeks ago in an ambush in Baghdad. An announcement purporting to come from the group was posted on the internet. It came after the Iraqi prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, presented a national reconciliation plan to parliament. Jim Muir reports from Baghdad:

Just hours after the announcement of the reconciliation plan, the umbrella group to which al-Qaeda belongs, issued internet video footage purporting to show the killing of three Russian embassy staffers who were among four abducted on June 3rd. The video showed one apparently being beheaded by two masked gunmen and another being shot dead. A third was shown on the ground, already apparently beheaded. There were no pictures of the fourth, though the statement said he too had been killed. The group had warned several days ago that the hostages would be executed because the Russian government had not heeded their demands to leave Chechnya and release Muslim prisoners.
