Acrimonious Match in Nuremburg, Portugal Enters the Quarter-finals

Portugal have secured their place in the quarter-finals of the football World Cup, beating the Netherlands in an acrimonious match in Nuremburg. More now from Harry Peart in Berlin.

Portugal won the match 1-0 with a goal from Maniche in the 23rd minute but it was the referee and foul play which dominated the proceedings in a match which could have been a classic. The game ended with both teams down to nine men with the Russian referee, Valentin Ivanov, handing out sixteen yellow cards. The disciplinary proceedings marred an encounter which showed flashes of brilliance from both sides. Once again the Dutch have failed to live up to expectations while the Portuguese, under their coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, the man who took Brazil to the title four years ago, continued to impress by reaching the last eight for the first time in forty years.
